Man, woman, married, single, old, young. Whoever you are, there is sound instruction found in the words of Titus 2. In the wake of the opening chapter where the apostle Paul had just directed Titus about matters of church government and how to set in order the things that were wanting in the churches, he begins by exhorting him how to discharge his own office faithfully. Part and parcel of this role, says Paul, is that pastors and elders must not stay in vague generalities but must divide to every one his or her portion, what belongs to one’s age, or place, or condition in life. All of this instruction is for one primary purpose: “to adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things” (Titus 2:10).
That is to say, character matters, and it is one’s character that will stand out and recommend the gospel to those who are without such hope. It is through the personal display of one’s meekness, gentleness, humility, obedience, and faithful conduct in all things that sets the Christian apart and impresses upon the world a radical way of living. It is in this display, however imperfect, that those who are without hope can discover the answer to their hopelessness.
